Firefox 4 Beta 5 with Better Security & Hardware Acceleration

Firefox has released the latest Firefox 4 beta 5 with it a couple of new features like hardware acceleration for Windows users and a new audio API. Firefox 4 Beta 5 now uses Direct2D by default to speed up page rendering. Firefox 4 Beta 5 also comes with a new security feature which enables sites to force HTTPS connections.
According to Mr. Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's director of Firefox, "The latest update to Firefox 4 Beta brings super fast graphics and incredible new audio capabilities to the Web. Firefox 4 Beta now leverages hardware acceleration to improve graphics performance for Windows users and also allows, for the first time, the visualization of audio data within the browser," he explained.

Hardware acceleration is the main feature for Windows users. Firefox 4 Beta 5 now uses Direct2D by default to speed up page rendering. You will need a graphics card supporting DirectX 10, but the difference it makes, especially for visually intensive web pages, is significant. Mozilla doesn't have an alternative to Direct2D on other platforms, since it's a Microsoft technology, so Linux and Mac users are out of luck for now. The team has said that it is looking at ways of bringing hardware acceleration to all users at some point.

Firefox 4 Beta 5 also has a new audio API. The API gives developers the ability to read and write raw audio data within the browser. It's a pretty powerful API and comes in very handy in a few specialized use cases. However, it is unlikely to make a difference for most users.
Firefox 4 Beta 5 will also support for HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS). This new security protocol enables webmasters to request that Firefox always uses HTTPS connections for that site. This way, in the case of a man in the middle attack, which would try to redirect you to a non-encrypted version of that site, Firefox will automatically replace any HTTP URL with HTTPS ones.

Google Chrome 6.0 Final is Out Now

Google Chrome 6.0.472.53 has been released to the 1st stable channels for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The previous beta release was Chrome 6.0.472.51, so the changes are minimal. There is however a big number of security fixes which have only now been revealed. Updates from the previous stable release include: Updated UI, Form Autofill, Syncing of extensions and Autofill data, Increased speed and stability.According to Brian Rakowski, Product Manager for Google Chrome, "Today, we’re releasing a new stable version of Chrome that is even faster and more streamlined. Chrome is now three times faster than it was two years ago on JavaScript performance. We’ve also been working on simplifying the 'chrome' of Chrome. As you can see, we took the already minimalist user interface and stripped it down a bit more to make it easier to use," he listed some of the improvements in the latest stable release.:

"We combined Chrome’s two menus into one, revisited the location of the buttons, cleaned up the treatment of the URL and the Omnibox, and adjusted the color scheme of the browser to be easier on the eyes," he added.

No new features have been added since, the team focused on bug fixes and a little more UI polish. Compared to Chorme 5.0, the previous stable release, there are plenty of changes. The first Chrome 6.0 beta was released less than a month ago. Work on Google Chrome 7.0 has started already and the first releases already available for download at the dev channel. Google intends to accelerate the development process and now plans to release a Chrome stable once every month and a half rather than once every three most like until now. We can hope the release of Google Chrome 7.0 stable very soon.

Google Chrome 7.0 Released for Dev Channel

Google made available for download the first Chrome 7.0 for all platforms. Google Chrome 7.0.503.1 dev is an incremental update with very few changes for those already using the dev channel builds. The Dev channel has been updated to 7.0.503.0 for Windows, Mac and Chrome Frame; 7.0.503.1 for Linux.
The changes in the first Chrome 7 release are largely dependent on the last version used. Those who follow the dev channel have nothing to be excited about, with an update coming every week or so, the changes are rarely substantial.
There is just one fix in the latest release of interest to Linux users: "IP addresses typed into the omnibox now work when offline."

Recently released the latest Chrome 6 beta, there aren't many noticeable changes in Chrome 7. However, bigger changes are on the roadmap. For one, web apps will be fully supported in Chrome 7. The Chrome Web Store is already live in testing for developers and is now slated for an October launch. The sync capabilities will be extended as well, to include support for web app sync, for obvious reasons, but also tab sync. Later on, password sync and perhaps history sync will be included, but these may not end up in Chrome 7. The stable release is still Google Chrome 5.0 but the Google Chrome 6.0 beta should be available for the stable channel soon.

For Linux Download the desired channel:
Requirements: Intel Pentium 4 / Athlon 64 or later CPU; 32- or 64-bit Ubuntu 8.04 or later, or 32-bit Debian 5. Support for other Linux distributions is planned; unpacking the .deb files by hand may work.

Note: Installing Google Chrome will add the Google repository so your system will automatically keep Chrome up to date. If you don't want Google's repository, do "sudo touch /etc/default/google-chrome" before installing the package.

Google Chrome 7 is Ready Now!

The Google Chrome 6 Beta has just been made available and Google has already started to work for Chrome 7. Yes Google is has started to cocked the Chrome 7 very fast. The first Chrome 7 builds available in the Chromium repositories. Chromium 7.0.497 is the first build to get a major version. There're are minimal and evolutionary changes from the latest Google Chrome 6.0.490.1 dev.
The Chromium
7.0.497 builds continue the UI revamp with some small bug fixes. Chromium 7 also support for web apps and the Chrome Web Store, slated for launch later this year. Chrome 6 already has support for web apps, but it’s not enabled by default.

Chromium 7 also feature the “click-to-play” functionality for blocked plugins which enabled by default. Other features linked to Chrome OS, which is also slated for a fall launch, should be making their way into Chrome 7 as well.

Google plans to ramp up the delivery schedule. Google aiming to launch a major stable release once every six weeks rather than three months as is the norm now. We hope that Google Chrome 7 stable should be available at the end of September. Google has just released the Chrome 6 beta but the first Chrome 6 stable release should be coming very soon and which has already seen a small update. And the stable builds for Chrome is still Chrome 5.

Firefox 4 Beta 3 with Multi-Touch and Faster JavaScript

The latest update of Firefox 4 Beta is now available for download and testing in more than 30 languages, adding 10 new languages. Firefox 4 beta 3 doesn’t come with much in terms of visual changes, but has some big new features.Firefox 4  Beta 3 support for multi-touch in Windows 7 and faster JavaScript rendering. Mozilla says that the 500,000 or so Firefox 4 Beta users send about 3,500 feedback reports each day using the add-on.
Mike Beltzner, Mozilla’s Director of Firefox, writes on mozilla blog , “The latest update of Firefox 4 Beta is now available for download and testing in more than 30 languages, adding 10 new languages. This update includes multi-touch support for Windows 7 and new JavaScript values to experience faster and smoother graphics. We also have vital feedback from our testers that we will incorporate into future updates”.

Multi-touch support is only available under Windows 7 so far, but it enables users to interact with websites in a more natural way, providing they’re using a touch-enabled device. Touch interfaces are becoming increasingly popular, so far mostly on mobile devices, but recently on larger devices such as tablets, as well.

With a number of Windows 7-based tablets coming, users should appreciate a browser that natively supports multi-touch. The problem with this is that most websites aren’t optimized for multi-touch so even if you have a touch display and Firefox 4, most of the content on the web won't be able to leverage the capabilities.

Hopefully, now that Firefox supports the feature and is providing the necessary tools for web developers to use the capabilities of the device, more websites will implement touch-friendly interfaces.

Changes to the C++ representation of JavaScript enable Firefox to execute heavy, numeric code more efficiently. This sort of code is used to produce smooth, streamlined graphics in modern Web applications. Basically, the change should speed up websites which leverage HTML5 features like Canvas for graphics, but also other computation-heavy JavaScript sites.

The new JavaScript value representation is the result of work done on the JaegerMonkey experimental engine. The project is used to try different approaches in speeding up JavaScript and is separate from the engine used in Firefox 4. The developers borrowed some ideas from WebKit and the LuaJIT and expanded on them, especially for the 64-bit version.
